How Your Skincare Routine Should Change as You Age

Creating a skincare routine can be difficult. There are many factors that go into creating a routine:

  1. Understanding that your skin is unique. What works for your friend may not work for you.
  2. Your skin health is affected by biological, environmental, and dietary factors.
  3. Your skin is constantly adapting and changing.

Today, we are going to walk you through the general rules of thumb for how you should adjust your skincare routine as you age!

Skincare Rules for All Ages:

  1. Get to know your skin type: It’s hard to determine your skincare regimen if you don’t know what kind of skin you have. Understanding this will help you select products and formulas that best address your skincare concerns.
  2. SPF SPF SPF: Nearly 90% of how your skin ages are related to sun exposure. It is super important to wear SPF year-round. Just because it’s not sunny outside does not mean that your skin isn’t exposed to those harmful rays!

Teens:

In your teenage years, your hormones are fluctuating wreaking havoc on your skin. This is an important time to figure out what works for you! Remember that your skin is unique, and what works for the people around you may not work for you! 

 

  1. Cleanse: In your teenage years, your hormones can trigger your oil glands to go into overdrive. Cleansing properly will help reduce excess oil and acne!
  2. Exfoliate: When your hormones fluctuate your pores tend to clog. Using a gentle exfoliator 2-3 times a week will help deep cleanse your pores!
  3. Massage: Throughout your body, you have lymph nodes that store toxins and fat, which depends on mechanical intervention to keep it flowing. The results of including this into your routine include: increased circulation, alleviation of muscle tension, released endorphins (alleviates stress), detoxified skin(aka hormonal breakouts), and promotes absorption.

20’s:

In your 20's it is important to start developing good habits that will set you up for better skin for the rest of your life. Prevention is key!

  1. Layering – Order Matters: Layering your skincare products properly helps the efficacy and efficiency of your products. A general rule of thumb - layer from the lightest to the heaviest and creamiest.
  2. Extra Treatments/ Skincare Tools: In your 20’s you start to lose the structural proteins that keep your skin youthful and supple, so it is important to introduce skincare tools and treatments in your monthly regimen. Including monthly treatments will help improve the tone and texture of your skin, and help combat aging.
  3. Retinols, Hyaluronic Acid, and Antioxidants: Retinols =Antiaging, Hyaluronic Acid = hydrating, and Antioxidants= Elimination of free radicles. Including these into your regimen will help your skin remain youthful, healthy, and supple.

30’s & 40’s:

By the time you’ve hit your 30’s and 40’s your skins structural proteins have been breaking down for over 10 years! This is when wrinkles and fine lines start to play a factor. Your skin also starts producing less oil, so you want to look for rich formulas that are really hydrating. 

  1. Be Gentle: When you hit your 30’s and 40’s your skin increasingly becomes more and more fragile. It is important that you cleanse and apply moisturizers gently to ensure that you don’t accelerate aging.
